Shahzia Sikander - Painting
Moma's Red Studio recently did an in interview with artist Shahzia Sikander. What I like about her work is that she is a modern artist who seems to handle classical middle eastern art elements without it being sarcastic or tongue in cheek. Her work seems to be genuinely influenced by her artistic heritage instead of her simply referencing it like so many artists do. Her animations are much the same way. They are essentially paintings that are augmented with motion and sound but not dominated by the need for it. In other words, she's still telling the story much like a painter would through a series of works, but is instead, utilizing the tool of animation without succumbing to the burden of the endless possible uses of the tool.
