Wayne Dunkley - Applied Phenomenology

Wayne Dunkley has taken his experiences with race stereotyping and racism and employed poster based phenomenology to further elicit a study of his experience. Wayne created a poster of his face and placed either "a _______" or "the_______" below his picture. He then placed 400 posters up in Toronto and Ontario over the course of four years and observed what people filled in the blanks and how his image was treated.

Sorry but plastering 400 pictures of yourself around toronto ... or anywhere else in the world isnt going to prove anything .

Yes.. your portrait /mug shot will be taken down removed/vandalized etc and interesting to see what racial slurs people will write but seriously now .... just because he is of a black skin color doesnt mean shit. You could be mexican , chinese, white ... whatever skin color and plaster your face around toronto, youll get the same results.

I really dont think any of this is relevant to what he is doing/ or trying to prove - seems to me like hes only asking for attention from his ego-tistical nature

( yes, I have met Wayne Dunkley before and black , white , asian, mexican or whatever .. i think he is super full of himself...)

Sounds like Mr. Anonymous is jealous. I think you're missing the point, he's not playing the race card, his premise would hold interesting regardless of race and yes White folks will get treated differently than black. One of the primary points of graffiti is to see how people manipulate their environment in an semi-democratic way. What is interesting is that Dunkley uses photos, something that is much more recognizable rather than a usual stylized signature or cartoon character. I don't think he's inferring a direct correlation between how people are treating his picture and how they want to treat him in a face to face context, but I think something slightly interesting is displayed by how people treat his image. I would say that the primary flaw is not that he is full of himself, it's that he didn't conduct his experiment using other face of other races or other photos in general.
