Materials Research
Throughout human history, material innovation has been defined by the persistent testing of limits. Transmaterial is a catalog of materials, products and processes that are redefining our physical environment, based on a compi-lation of Blaine Brownell's "product of the week" electronic journal developed at nbbj. They provide a great .pdf of this book for free. It has almost 200 pages of innovative materials and product usages. The different material categories they research are:
ULTRAPERFORMING - Materials which are stronger, lighter, and more durable than their conventional counterparts.
MULTIDIMENSIONAL - Materials which exploit depth in their manufacture for enhanced stability, texture, and richness
REPURPOSED - Materials which act as surrogates replacing precious raw materials conventionally used in various applications.
RECOMBINANT - Materials consisting of two or more different materials acting in harmony to augment performance.
INTELLIGENT - Materials that are designed to improve their environment and which take inspiration from biological systems.
TRANSFORMATIONAL - Materials which undergo a physical morphosis based on environmental stimuli.
INTERFACIAL - Materials which facilitate the interaction between physical and virtual worlds.
